Two Lines Urdu Poetry

Two line Urdu poetry is very popular and often most of the poetry by general public is remembered in the form of couplets. Though Urdu ghazals and nazams are popular as well but usually it is the two line poetry (couplet) which is often quoted by the people in day to day discussions.

A couplet is two lines of poetry which follow each other and are often connected by rhyme. A couplet usually conveys a complete thought. Couplet is a French word which means “two pieces hinged together” and their use in poetry dates back to thirteenth century. Couplets are divided to different types based on their rhyme, meter or origin. Some of the types are mentioned below.
Open couplet: Open couplet or run-on couplet is the one which has continuous flow and both lines make a complete sentence.
Closed couplet: A close couplet or formal couplet is the one where there is a pause at the end of line indicating that each line is a separate sentence.
Qasida: A qasida has series of couplets and usually found in arabic poetry. Split couplet: Split couplet has an asymmetrical rhythm where first line is iambic pentameter and next one is is iambic dimeter.
